back from Punish Yourself, Antipode, Rennes
First part was assumed by Deadcell and maybe they should have abstained. Some kind of Ministry/KMFDM sound, mostly with a (bad) recorded backtrack and strange videos in the background (I had a problem associating correctly the images of Saddam Hussein, Adolf Hitler, Religion and the USA, but that may be just me). The girls on guitars were kinda cute, but I spent maybe 5 mins trying to see if their instruments were plugged in.
Punish Yourself may be uglier, but at least they sounded far better (even if this time I had a doubt with the drummer vs the backtrack). They were screaming, painted, flaming and moving the people around and that was good. Soundwise, they’re a bit of mix between punk, rockabilly (I’m pretty sure to have clearly heard that influence in one or two songs) and hard techno. Stage-wise, it was also really nice to watch: lasers, flames and body paint.
Overall, it was just a bit short (1h and 1:25 respectively) but it felt good in the end.

Have we been watching the same concerts ? Both bands were really good. And an interesting
combination. Deadcell’s a bit more old-school ( like Ministry and KMFDM indeed ). I also agree Deadcell’s sound is a bit less heavy than Punish Yourself. But well defined and powerful. The guitars were definately plugged in, which means the band played really tight if you didn’t notice.
Punish Yourself is heavier, because it’s a band and their music is a bit more aggressive. Really liked their show too. Drums were also live too ( on top of the backtrack ).
In total a great night. Really enjoyed myself.

Well, we probably watched the same concert, but with different points of view.
I wasn’t really impressed by the guitar sound, especially given the guitars they were using: Ibanez and what? MusicMan Silhouette maybe (judging by the head and maple fretboard). I may be a bad guitar player, but I allow myself to scoff at dumb solos (although this was not required by the genre). And definitely, the backtrack sounded bad: muddy, muffled. I was about to accuse my earplugs until Punish Yourself took the stage. But maybe they just suffered from being the concert opener, as usual. They weren’t that bad as my post opening sentence might induce, but in this configuration, they didn’t convince me.
Anyway, the good thing is that we both enjoyed the show and that’s all that matters in the end! Thanks for coming to their defense!
